License plates collectors are becoming prolific and, as a hobby, this is an interesting area for many. We're not talking about old, dinged-up ones you might see hanging on the wall at a junkyard or service station. Collections usually include new-looking, attractive examples that are proudly on display in someone's home or business.
Some collectors are only interested in acquiring authentic, actual out-of-use plates that have been totally refurbished. These can be found fairly easily, especially online, and are representative of most the the U. S. States and also many foreign countries. Prices can fall anywhere between five dollars for a commonly found item to a hundred dollars and more.
As part of their vehicle registration process, nearly all the states offer personalized (or 'vanity') plates. These will usually involve extra charges but many feel the extra personalization on their car worth the additional expense. Sometimes it's a little tough trying to figure out the meaning of some of these personal identifiers and a fun game to see who can decipher the plate quickest.
The fact is, however, that most of these items are purchased not for installation on one's automobile but, rather, as a piece of decoration or to become part of a larger collection. Someone who lives in a particular state, for example, may be on a quest to obtain every different design the state has employed for vehicle identification for the past one hundred years. There are lots of options to building and displaying an impressive collection.
Nearly everyone collects something. For some it's spoons or golf balls gotten from courses played. Matchbooks, matchboxes and playing cards are popular collectibles, as are clocks and teddy bears. Those interested in cars and automotive history might find enjoyment in gathering a group of these 6" by 12" license placards for display.
There is a large number of companies also offering replicas and items made for special order. You can have a plate made to your specifications or choose from the many variations in stock. These are generally made from aluminum and are strong, durable and light in weight. They are usually very reasonable price-wise and easy to buy and have shipped.
When we were children it was baseball cards and comics that garnered our attention. Now, as adults, collecting license plates can provide the same satisfaction to some. A well-displayed collection can be both unique and creative. This is definitely an area of growing interest. Maybe there's something here for you, too.
